The Maze
Driving The Maze takes guts. It’s an intense technical challenge with several obstacles that will have your heart trying to pump its way out of your chest. It features steep ascents, descents, extreme off-camber sections, and arresting views of cliff edges up to 1,200 feet in the air. When you finally find your way to the end of The Maze and find your bearings again, it will feel like you are breathing for the first time. If you’re a hard-core offroader looking for your next adventure, The Maze is for you.
Milts Mile
The first trail developed in the Sand Hollow area is Milt’s Mile, named after Milt Thompson, who designed it. The first time he drove the trail, Milt thought it was a great challenge with beautiful views, but he knew he could make it even better. The trail was adjusted several times and a reservoir was even added. Now, the trail features almost continuous obstacles throughout. On Milt’s Mile, you’ll traverse slick rock, canyon bottoms, sand dunes, steep bowls, and maybe even some waterfalls. And along the way, you’ll see vibrant desert rock formations, smooth sand dunes, and the Sand Hollow Reservoir and Zion in the background. Milt’s Mile is a spectacular adventure.
Nasty Half
You’ll need 2 lockers and at least 35” tires for this one because as the name suggests, Nasty Half is indeed nasty. The trail consists of slickrock with steep climbs, waterfalls, slot canyons, and sandy washes. The trail begins with a sheer vertical wall that doesn’t diminish until you push over a sandy hill into the dunes. The awesome challenge of Nasty Half is paired with an awesome landscape. You’ll catch views of the Hurricane Sand Dunes, Sand Hollow Reservoir, and Zion.
Waynes World
Wayne’s World is a 6 ½ mile loop that starts at the Red Gate on Sand Mountain. Comprised of sand dunes, sheer slickrock, off-camber sections, washes, and ledges, Wayne’s World offers many challenges. The trail begins at the Red Gate on Sand Mountain. The route showcases exceptional views of Zion National Park, The Pine Valley Mountains, the Hurricane Cliffs, and Sand Hollow Reservoir.
West Rim
As one of the most popular Winter 4×4 Jamboree trails, West Rim is not one to skip. West rim is a 4-rated trail that is great for groups with a wide variety of vehicles. That’s what makes it so popular; even if you have vehicles that range from stock to wild, there will be something for each. West Rim is worth doing for the obstacles alone, but the exceptional desert scenery is just as rewarding. The trail features views of Sand Hollow Reservoir, Pine Valley Mountain, Zion Park, Warner Vally, Hurricane Cliffs, Hurricane Sand Dunes, and the Arizona Strip.
Honeymoon Trail
The Honeymoon Trail was once used by pioneers to get to the St. George temple to get married. It was one of the earliest wagon trails down the cliff. Now it’s an epic 3-rated off-roading trail. But keep your eyes peeled, there are lots of remnants of the original trail paths. The views from the cliff edge are amazing and the perfect reward for making it to the top of the trail. The Honeymoon Trail overlooks St. George, Hurricane, and Zion.
Sliplock Gulch
Sliplock Gulch has 3 sections full of sand, slickrock waterfalls, and rocky gulches. The first section extends from the dunes to the bottom of the gulch. It has a few steep waterfalls, but you won’t encounter any major obstacles yet. It’s a good warm-up for the challenges ahead. Section 2 has a series of tight climbs through the gulch— including Horseshoe Falls, which has been the cause of many tip-overs and breaks. After the gulch, the trail follows the west side back down. The third section begins at a sand drop into another, wider gulch. Section 3 features some difficult ledges (which drivers commonly bypass), then a few more climbs into a slot, and ends with a wide V-notch. Sliplock Gulch is a tough trail. Drive carefully and enjoy the epic ride.
Double Sammy
It’s relatively short, but that doesn’t make it any less grueling. Double Sammy is packed with intense non-stop challenges. It even has some extra difficult options, including a 70ft steep chute. The trail features deep sand dunes, sandstone, vertical walls, steps, lots of ascents and descents, and off-camber sections. Of course all your focus should be on driving, but if you get a second it’s worth it to look around. The route has phenomenal views of Sand Hollow Reservoir, Zion Park, Pine Valley Mountains, and Hurricane Cliffs.
