4 Closest Off-Road Trails to Boulder, Colorado

Boulder sits in northern Colorado, about 35 minutes northwest of Denver. If you’re in the area, looking for some off-roading nearby, here are the 4 closest 4×4 trails:

Boulder County Road
This is a straight-through road that is open year-round. It stays mostly dry throughout all seasons, its south-facing hills keep the snow away from the trail. The road is rough and moderately difficult with some severe washouts. There are many signs near the road that discourage recreation because there is a neighborhood nearby. Enjoy yourself, but be careful to respect the area’s private property.

Winiger Ridge
Winiger Ridge is 45 minutes from Boulder. It allows access to the west side of Gross Reservoir if you’re looking for a scenic place to paddle board and enjoy the sun. The trail gets steep and narrow in some areas, but it is easy enough for most skill levels. Although, 4WD is recommended. There is a steep hill along the road that would be next to impossible for a 2WD vehicle.

Sugarloaf Mountain
This trail is as stunning as it sounds, the views are sugar-sweet. Aspens and lodgepole pines surround the trail and you get glimpses of the snow-capped Rockies through the gaps. It’s especially captivating in the fall when the aspens’ leaves turn gold.

Switzerland Trail
Most of Switzerland Trail is a shelf road with a slight grade. It follows the old railroad track that ran from Sugarloaf Mountain to Gold Hill. It’s a gorgeous drive in the summer, and just as popular in the winter (and possibly more fun). The snow adds some extra thrill to the route in the winter. The main trail is easy and has no required obstacles.
